1998 METRO SPORTS A NEW LOOK
AND MATCHING CHEVROLET BOWTIE
Chevrolet Metro, the nation's highest mileage passenger car for seven of the past eight years, enters 1998 with a contemporary new appearance, a new engine and a new place within the Chevrolet lineup. As the low-cost, high-mileage coupe and sedan, Metro provides a logical entry point for younger and first-time buyers into the complete Chevrolet lineup. For 1998, all Metro models get redesigned front and rear fascias for a stylish look. There are also new seat fabrics, composite headlamps and a new exterior color, California Gold Metallic. Even the wheel covers for the Coupe and Sedan models get a fresh look for 1998, complementing the enhanced exterior treatment. Under the hood, the throttle-body Electronic Fuel Injection system has been replaced by a Multi-Port Fuel Injection (MFI) design, for the 1.3 Liter 4-cylinder engine on LSi Coupe and LSi Sedan. MFI places one injector at each cylinder for quicker, more precise fuel delivery. And now, engine breathing is facilitated with four valves instead of two. Its surprisingly well equipped and provides lots of standard safety and convenience features not available on Toyota Tercel or Hyundai Accent, like Daytime Running Lamps and Scotchgard Protector. Four-wheel independent suspension and stainless-steel exhaust muffler and tailpipe are also standard. And, making room for cargo is easy with standard rear fullfolding seats on all models and an optional rear split-folding seat with pass-through feature on the LSi Sedan. For 1998, Chevrolet will be targeting the twenty-something generation with Metro through several partnership efforts, including free movie screenings at college campuses, the HORDE Music Festival (Horizons Of Rock Developing Everywhere) and Campus Fest. These touring events will increase brand awareness among young adults with vehicle displays, entertaining movies, music and games.

TAKE A BOW, GEO - Buy The Metro Here
Metro, Prizm and Tracker will be rebadged with the Chevrolet bowtie in the '98 model year. Why the switch? Well, Geo has effectively served its purpose as an import challenger but, Chevrolet has strengthen its reputation for quality, value and reliability among consumers since 1991 and Chevy anticipates that the Metro image will become even stronger under the Chevrolet namplate. The timing of this transition couldn't be better. For 1998, Metro will receive modifications and Prizm will be completely redesigned. Despite this "Metromorphosis," the new Chevy Metro, Prizm and Tracker will continue to offer the same 3 year/36,000-mile Bumper to Bumper warranty, 24-Hour Roadside Assistance and Courtesy Transportation. Plus, purchasing or servicing Metro is convenient because owners can visit any one of over 4,300 Chevrolet dealerships throughout the country.

SAFETY - Buy The Metro Here
Even in a small car like Metro, there is plenty of room for safety. GM packs occupant protection and crash-avoidance features inside and out.
Crash Avoidance Features
- Standard Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) turn on automatically when the ignition is on to increase Metro visibility to other drivers. DRL are required to run at a lower intensity than regular headlamps to reduce glare to oncoming drivers. DRL turn off when the vehicle's headlamps are engaged.
- 4-wheel Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), optional on all Metro models, automatically adjusts brake pressure to the front and rear wheels during hard braking situations, minimizing wheel lockup and helping maintain steering control.
- Brake Transmission Shift Interlock, standard on Metro models equipped with automatic transmissions, prevents shifting out of park without hrst depressing the brake pedal.
- Starter Interlock Switch, standard on Metro models equipped with manual transmissions, requires drivers to depress the clutch pedal to start the ignition.
- Sloping hood design and large windshield of Metro contribute to optimum road visibility.
- Center, high-mounted stoplamp makes the vehicle more visible from behind when braking.

ABS - Buy The Metro Here
Buying a car with anti-lock brakes might require drivers, unfamiliar with this feature, to "unlearn" past braking habits. Drivers, accustomed to traditional brake systems, have been taught to pump the brake pedal when braking hard on slippery surfaces, to keep the car's wheels from locking up. With ABS; pumping renders the system ineffective. The system was designed to adjust brake pressure at each wheel independently, to avoid wheel lockup: To become familiar with the system, drivers should take the vehicle to an unoccupied parking lot (preferably one with slick pavement) and practice sudden hard braking maneuvers to get a feel for the system.
BODY STRUCTURE - Buy The Metro Here
The rigid body structure of Metro provides a smooth ride and predictable, responsive handling.
ENGINES - Buy The Metro Here
1.0 Liter SOHC Engine (LP2)
The 1.0 Liter SOHC L3 with EFI offers durability and reliability in a compact package. This 3-cylinder, Electronic Fuel-Injection engine is standard on Metro Coupe with 5-speed manual transmission.
· 55 horsepower at 5700 rpm
· 58 lb.-ft. torque at 3300 rpm
Throttle-Body Fuel Injection positions the injectors centrally in a throttle-body housing which contains a valve to regulate the airflow through the intake manifold. This helps deliver a smooth idle und low emissions.
Convenient access to service and maintenance items such as plugs, oil filter and all fluid reservoirs makes do-it-yourself maintenance easy for economyminded Metro owners.
Cast-aluminum cylinder heads help maintain even engine temperatures and minimize weight. Aluminum was chosen since it conducts heat better than iron and also weighs less.
1.3 Liter SOHC Engine {LY8)
Standard on LSi models, this engine is redesigned for 1998. A 4-valve combustion chamber, instead of the two-valve design that powered the previous engine, increases the fuel-air flow to the engine and improves performance.
· 79 horsepower at 6000 rpm
· 75 lbs.-ft. of torque at 3000 rpm
· 4-valves per cylinder combustion chamber increases combustion
efficiency, for more power.
· Multi-Port Fuel Injection uses individual fuel injectors to
spray fuel into each intake port, for more precise fuel
management.
· Cast-aluminum cylinder hepds help maintain even engine
temperatures and minimize weight. Aluminum was chosen since it
conducts heat better than iron and also weighs less.
· Distributorless ignition eliminates the need for periodic
engine timing adjustments.

5-Speed Manual Transmission
A five-speed manual transmission with Overdrive is standard on all Metro models. The wide range of gear ratios allows the driver to select the best gear for any driving situation. The 5-speed manual transmission is engineered to make shifting smooth and easy:
· Upshift indicator light signals when to shift gears for the best fuel economy.
· Overdrive fifth gear reduces engine rpm at cruising speed, thereby increasing fuel economy and reducing wear and engine noise.
3-Speed Automatic Transmission
For those who prefer the convenience of automatic shifting, an optional 3-speed automatic transmission is available on LSi Coupe and Sedan.
· Shift indicators (PRN321) give the driver precise indication of the gear selected.
· Brake/transmission shift interlock is a safety feature that requires the driver to apply the brake pedal before shifting out of Park.
