THE 1998 MAZDA PROTEGE:
SPACIOUS IS AS SPACIOUS DOES
Interior spaciousness is a distinct highlight of the Mazda Protege. With 95.5 cubic feet of interior room, the five-passenger Protege is one of the roomiest vehicles in its class. The 13.1 cubic feet available in the trunk also places the Protege among the class leaders. Mazda designers chose the phrase "OptiSpace" to describe their goal of providing the optimum usable interior room in the Protege, and the result continues to give it an edge over the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic and Nissan Sentra.

The DX and LX feature a highly efficient 1.5-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine that provides 92 horsepower (90 hp in Calif.). The ES is powered by a 122-horsepower version of the 1.8-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine found in Mazda's classic Miata sports car. Both engines are offered with a choice of a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic transmission.

Interior - Buy The Protege Here
The Protege's advantages extend beyond its interior roominess. The Protege has been singled out for its handling, power and fun-to-drive characteristics in several comparison tests and has done well against its competition from Honda, Toyota and Nissan.
Exterior - Buy The Protege Here
The Protege features an exceptionally rigid body--a MacPherson strut layout in front with a stabilizer bar standard on all models and Mazda's Twin Trapezoidal Link design on the rear suspension (the ES model adds a rear stabilizer bar). These features, along with power-assist rack-and-pinion steering, make the Protege a stable, easy-to-maneuver, fun-to-drive car.
Safety - Buy The Protege Here
High-strength steel bars in the doors, dual airbags, available four-wheel anti-lock brakes and a front frame, designed to direct energy from a frontal impact around the passenger compartment rather than through it, add safety and security to the Protege.
