For 1998, Mazda offers three models in the Protege line - the entry-level DX, well-equipped LX and powerful ES. The DX and LX feature a highly efficient 1.5-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine that provides 92 horsepower (90 hp in Calif.). The ES is powered by a 122-horsepower version of the 1.8-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine found in Mazda's classic Miata sports car. Both engines are offered with a choice of a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic transmission.
