Redesigned last model year, the four-passenger SC1 and SC2 enjoyed increased market acceptance in 1997 with coupe sales garnering 22.6 percent of total Saturn volume ... an increase of 21.5 percent from 1996. For 1998, both the SC1 and SC2 continue to combine exceptional value, spirited performance and Saturn's commitment to exceeding customer expectations at all levels of the ownership experience. With the exception of new, optional aluminum wheels for the SCl, coupe models' exteriors are relatively unchanged from last year.

Smooth clean surfaces, coupled with a long front and short rear overhang, highlight the flowing lines characteristic of both the SC1 and SC2 coupe models. Up front, the low cowl and sloping hood are designed to provide increased forward visibility. A wide, low front air intake provides increased airflow for better bottom breathing. High intensity, modular headlamps are integrated into the front fascia and align with the top of the hood. Body color fascias continue as a standard feature on all coupe models for a more refined, integrated appearance. The rear bumper system of the coupes feature a one piece injection molded polycarbonate beam behind the fascia and is designed to withstand 5 mph rear impacts with minimal damage. As part of General Motors commitment to accident avoidance, Daytime Running Lamps (DRLs) are a standard feature. Foglamps are standard on the SC2. The smooth flowing lines are carned through along the side of the vehicle. Polymer body panel construction for the doors, fenders, quarter panels and fascias do not rust and minimize susceptibility to dents and dings. Also, no side moldings are needed. The short decklid is designed to minimize unwanted water runoff into the trunk area and is cut deep to the top of the bumper for low lift over of groceries or packages. Trunk volume is 11.4 cubic feet. High mounted, wraparound taillamps, coupled with an applique panel running across the rear of the vehicle emphasize the width and stability of the coupe model. Badging is minimal, with the Saturn logo placed in the centers of the decklid and front fascia, and on the front fenders. The Saturn name is debossed in the rear bumper fascia. SC2 models feature a rear decklid spoiler is also available for SC1 versions. Available equipment for both coupe models includes a power-operated sunroof and removable roof rack for additional storage capacity. Additionally, all exterior bodyside panels are easily unbolted for service eliminating the need for disassembly of interior panels or related hardware. Upper panel areas, including the roof, hood and decklid are constructed of steel. Dimensionally, length of the coupe is 180 inches, width is 67.3 inches and height is 52.4 inches. Drag coefficient for the SC1 is .330 while the SC2 is .310. Curb weight for the SC1 when equipped with a manual transmission and air conditioning is 2,309 lbs. Weight for similarly-equipped coupes with an automatic transmission is 2,338 pounds. Weight for the SC2 models, equipped with the DOHC engine is 2,380 lbs. and 2,410 lbs., respectively.

Storage areas in the passenger compartment include front and rear consoles with dual storage bins and dual cupholders.

SAFETY - Buy The SC1, SC2 Here

In the areas of safety, three point active belts are utilized for all passengers. Supplemental inflatable restraints are standard for both front seat occupants. For 1998, Reduced Force Air Bags have been incorporated into the entire Saturn model line-up. ( See End Note*.) Occupants should always wear seat belts even in vehicles equipped with airbags and sit as far away as practical from the SIR module while still maintaining proper control of the vehicle. Personal security is enhanced with the Saturn Security System, which includes power door locks, when the vehicle is equipped with the available Power Convenience Package. A new passive feature, programmable by the retailer at the owner's request, will arm the security system one minute after the ignition is turned off and any door is cycled. The system also arms after tenminutes if the ignition has been turned off and no doors have been cycled. A red panic button on the key fob is included and if pressed, flashes the courtesy lamps and sounds the horn for up to two minutes.

POWER MODULE - Buy The SC1, SC2 Here

Two exclusive power modules (the combination of engine, transmission and integrated computer controls) continue to be offered across the Saturn model line-up for 1998. For 1998, structural improvements to the engine block and transmission case housings contribute to overall noise reduction and durability. Both versions of the 1.9 liter, four cylinder engine are constructed by Saturn and feature an all-aluminum block and cylinder heads. The 1.9 liter single overhead cam (SOHC) is the base engine in all Saturn models. With a compression ratio of 9.3:1, it produces 100 horsepower at 5000 rpm. Engine torque is equally impressive with 114 lb. ft at 2400 rpm. A five speed manual transmission is standard and a four speed automatic is available. For SC1 models equipped with the 1.9 liter SOHC, 0 to 60 mph acceleration is 10.5 seconds on coupes equipped with the manual transmission and 11.5 seconds for automatic-equipped versions. Precise fuel management is accomplished through a sequential port fuel injection system. On vehicles with the manual transmission, fuel economy is EPA-rated at 28/39 mpg city/highway. Coupes equipped with the automatic transmissions have an EPA fuel economy rating of 27 mpg city and 37 mpg highway. For those looking for more power, the dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) 1.9 liter engine is standard on SC2 models. In addition to a revised valve train, the engine has an increased 9.5:1 compression ratio and produces 124 horsepower at 5600 rpm. Engine torque also is increased to 122 lb. ft at 4800 rpm. Available with either the five speed manual or four speed automatic, 0 to 60 mph acceleration is improved to 9.0 seconds (manual) and 9.6 (automatic). For 1998, the transmission shift points on all automatic transmissions have been revised to provide less "hunting" and improved downshift quality. Fuel economy on the SC2 model is EPA-rated at 26 mpg city and 36 mpg on the highway. On models equipped with the automatic transmission, the EPA fuel economy rating 24 mpg city and 34 mpg highway.

CHASSIS & SUSPENSION - Buy The SC1, SC2 Here

With an overall length of 180 inches, the SC coupe rides on a wheelbase of 102.4 inches. Efficient four wheel independent suspension consists of MacPherson struts up front with a tri-link design in the rear. A 27.2 mm front stabilizer bar designed to help control roll and ore and aft movement is included on all SC1 models. A thicker, 28.6 mm stabilizer bar is standard on SC2 models. The tri-link rear suspension includes two unequal length links that help maintain minimal lateral movement and a single longitudinal link helps provide fore/aft control. On SC2 models, a 15 mm rear stabilizer bar is included for enhanced performance. Power assisted front disc/rear drum brakes are standard on both coupes models. Anti-lock brakes are available (for the SC2 this includes a four-wheel disc system). The ABS is designed to enhance vehicle stability and driver control during less than ideal braking situations. Stopping distances, depending on vehicle load and pavement conditions, from 60 to 0 mph are approximately 150 feet. On coupes equipped with the ABS system, 60 to 0 mph is accomplished in approximately 140 feet. The optional ABS brake system also includes traction control. Wheel speed sensors are located at each wheel and the system automatically engages when wheel slippage is detected during low traction situations, including icy or wet pavement conditions. Unlike brake only systems that apply only the brakes to the drive wheels to control wheel spin, Saturn utilizes the engine management system to reduce power through engine spark timing and fuel delivery. As traction becomes available, fuel delivery and spark timing return to normal levels. The traction control system also can be disabled manually with a switch on the instrument panel when some wheel slippage is desired, such as when stuck in deep snow. Power steering continues as standard equipment on all Saturn coupes. SC1 models are equipped with a continuous flow system. Three turns are required lock-to-lock on the SC1 and 2.67 turns lock-to-lock on the SC2. Curb-to-curb turning radius is 37.1 feet for both models. On the SC2, a variable effort power steering system is included. At low speeds, such as parking maneuvers, the variable system provides generous assist. As vehicle speed increases, the system provides firmer steering effort and more precise and sporty feel for the driver. Two wheel/tire combinations are available on the SC1 model. All season, P 175/70R14 tires mounted on 14 inch steel wheels are standard. Larger,15 inch aluminum wheels with P 185/65R15 tires are available. On SC2 models, low aspect P 195/60R15 tires with an "H" speed rating are standard.

(*END NOTE: Reduced Force Air Bags do not reduce the need to wear safety belts. Safety belts and proper child restraints will continue to be the most effective way to help reduce the risks of injury and death in a crash and are essential in helping protect occupants in crashes where air bags are not intended to provide protection- side impacts, rear impacts and rollovers. Furthermore, Reduced Force Air bags will not eliminate the risk to children in rear-facing infant seats. Rear-facing infant seats must be used only in rear seats. Reduced Force Air Bags will reduce some of the risks associated with air bag deployment for out-of-position occupants, but the risks are not eliminated. Whenever possible, children under 13 years of age should be in the back seat and hould always be properly secured.)
