The 1998 Accord Sedan benefits from the most comprehensive redesign in the 22-year history of Honda's best-selling model. Improvements include a more spacious interior; enhanced safety and security features; more powerful and efficient 4- and 6-cylinder engines; improved ride and handling; and a long list of standard features. An all-new 3.0-liter, SOHC, V-6 engine with Honda's patented VTEC (variable valve timing and valvelift electronic control) produces 200-horsepower and 195 foot-pounds of torque. The lightest and most compact V-6 engine in its class, the new engine provides an EPA estimated city/highway fuel economy rating of 21 /28 mpg and uses regular unleaded gasoline. Accord 4-cylinder DX, LX and EX models are powered by a 2.3-liter, SOHC, 16-valve engine. EX and LX models get a VTEC version of the engine, producing 150 horsepower and 152 lb.-ft. of torque.   The economical Accord DX engine produces 135-horsepower and 145 lb.-ft. of torque with an EPA city/highway fuel economy estimate of 22/29 mpg. .A 5-speed manual transmission is standard equipment on all 4-cylinder Accords. A new 4-speed automatic transmission with direct-electronic shift control for smoother gear changes is standard on all Accord V-6 Sedans, and available on 4-cylinder models. EX and LX 4-cylinder models meet California's Low Emission Vehicle (LEV) standard and will be sold throughout the United States.

Safety and security are enhanced in the 1998 Accord Sedan. The unit body, high strength cabin and ladder-type subframe help the Accord meet worldwide regulations for occupant protection, including U.S. frontal, side, and angled-front impact standards. For the first time, a V-6 powerplant is available in the Coupe end it's one of the most powerful in the class. The 200-horsepower, 3.0-liter, 24-valve aluminum V-6 features Honda's patented VTEC system (variable valve timing and lift electronic control) and moves the new Coupe from 0-60 in 8.2 seconds. The Coupe also is available with a 150-horsepower, 2.3-liter, 16-valve, 4-cylinder engine. The 4-cylinder engine meets California's stringent Low Emission Vehicle (LEV) standard.  The 4-cylinder is available with a 5-speed or 4-speed automatic transmission. The V-6 is equipped zvith the electronically-controlled automatic.
