1998 CAVALIER
LUXURY FEATURES
AT AN EASY-TO-OWN PRICE
The 1998 Chevy Cavalier offers so many standard features, its content list could easily be mistaken for that of a $ 30,000 luxury automobile at less than half the price. In fact, last year, no other car in the Cavalier price class offered features like a Passlock® theft-deterrent system, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, Daytime Running Lamps, theatre lighting or Scotchgard Protector on seats and door trim all standard. And, for 1998, the Cavalier lineup gets even stronger, with a new Z24 Convertible that replaces the LS Convertible. It boasts standard features such as a 2.4-Liter L4 SFI Twin Cam engine with 150 horsepower, Remote Keyless Entry, power door locks and 15-inch cross-lace design aluminum wheels. There are also innovative options, like speed-compensated volume on the AM/FM stereo with cassette player, plus electronic traction control that helps increase tire grip on slippery surfaces. This system is included with the optional 4-speed automatic transmission, available on all models, and also is available on Cavalier RS and Z24 Coupe and is standard on LS models.
EXTERIOR
There's news throughout the Cavalier lineup for 1998. On the outside, Medium Gold Metallic replaces Sandrift Metallic in the paint palette. And, sporty style is enhanced for the LS Sedan with an available rear spoiler, already standard on RS Coupe, Z24 Coupe and Z24 Convertible.
INTERIOR
Inside, there is a redesigned manual transmission shifter that gives a sturdier feel, along with a new front-passenger safety belt adjuster, which provides greater comfort and convenience in the new Z24 Convertible. The interiors of LS Sedan and Z24 models also receive a fresh look with a new seat sew pattern. In addition, base-level Cavalier gets an electric odometer/trip odometer, already standard on other Cavalier models.
ENGINE
Under the hood, the 2200 L4 SFI engine has been fine-tuned, with revisions to the pistons and composite intake manifold that contribute to quieter engine performance. Chevrolet positions Cavalier as the "easy-to-own smart buy" ... proven by its many thoughtful features that help reduce typical ownership worries, such as battery-rundown protection, platinum-tip spark plugs that allow for the first tune-up at 100,000 miles*, extended-life coolant with a change interval of 5 years or 150,000 miles* (whichever comes first) and two-side-galvanized steel throughout the body (except the roof to help fight corrosion. Cavalier also has received positive reviews from several consumer groups and publications. For example, the 1997 edition The Car Book (which compares warranties, customer complaints, price, crash-test results and fuel economy of several small cars) rated Cavalier above both Dodge Neon and Honda Civic. Money Magazine, in its March 1997 issue, called Cavalier LS a "best buy." The American Automobile Association (AAA) named Cavalier the top car in its under-$ 12,500 price class. Easy-to-own, small car value ... combined with unexpected luxury features.

EXTERIOR PAINT
Standard basecoat/ clearcoat paint on Cavalier resists fading and provides a highgloss shine for long-lasting exterior beauty for all colors, solid and metallic. The clearcoat system is formulated to minimize the effects of acid rain and other environmental damage. The paint process builds up six layers of protection on every new Cavalier. · A total immersion phosphate electrodeposition (ELPO) process applies the first layer of primer/paint. Electric voltage is applied to the bodies while submerged in the paint bath to ensure complete coverage, even in hard-to-reach areas. · A glossy, water-based highlighting solution is applied to all exterior surfaces to reveal any imperfections before the body is painted.

SUSPENSION
Cavalier provides drivers with a suspension that not only offers agile handling characteristics, but also provides a comfortable ride not usually associated with cars in this segment. The tight body structure is a big contributor to these goals. Because the body minimizes flex so well, it gave the suspension engineers a very stable platform from which to work, so they could concentrate on a suspension that provides predictable handling and a comfortable ride - and not worry about compensating for body flexing when cornering or going over bumps. Notable suspension features include:
STEERING
Power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering is standard on all Cavalier models for precise control under demanding driving conditions. This system provides:
BRAKES
All Cavalier models have front disc rear drum brakes with standard power assist. GM's award-winning ABS VI anti-lock brake system is standard equipment on all models. Some things to keep in mind about anti-lock brakes:
