Originally, introduced in 1971, the Toyota Celica sport coupe has delivered style, value and fun-to-drive performance for more than 25 years. Completely redesigned in 1995, Celica reintroduced the convertible model in '96. 1997 models carry-over unchanged except for new exterior color choices.

The Celica's exterior is highlighted by its stylized grille, which features aerodynamic headlamps and integrated driving lights. Celica's wind-cutting design offers 0.32 coeffcient of drag (Cd) and 0.33 with the optional rear spoiler. Color-keyed bumpers, door handles and folding dual sideview mirrors complete the vehicle's flowing, seamless look.

Beyond Celica's good looks is a choice of two four-cylinder twin-cam 16-valve powerplants, that deliver lively torque, fluid response and excellent effciency.

ST models are powered by a 1.8-liter, engine that produces 105 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 117 Ibs.lft. of torque at 2,800 rpm.

The GT model is a more powerful cruiser. Its 2.2-liter engine produces 130-horsepower at 5,400 rpm and 145 Ib./ft. of torque at 4,400 rpm. All GT models are equipped with an engine oil cooler. Both GT and ST grades are available in either fve-speed manual transmission or a fourspeed electronically-controlled automatic.

Celica features a precise four-wheel independent suspension system. MacPherson struts and a stabilizer bar are used up-front, with independent dual-links, coil springs, low pressure gas-filled shock absorbers and a stabilizer bar in the rear.

Providing excellent response and controllability under a variety of driving conditions is Celica's speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion steering. The system adjusts power boost according to road surfaces and engine speed for agile maneuverability.

Celica ST is equipped with front-disc and rear-drum brakes, while GT models offer four-wheel discs. Optional anti-lock brakes are available on all models for sure stops.

Like all Toyotas, Celica makes safety a priority. Important standard safety features include dual airbag Supplemental Restraint System, three point ELR / ALR safety belts, crumple zones and side-door beams.

Available on Celica GT Liftback models is a Sport Package with sport-tuned shocks, springs, stabilizer bars and high-performance V-rated tires for aggressive fun and a roadhugging ride. Factor in added amenities like alloy wheels, sport seats and leather trimmed steering wheel and shifter, and you've got a real performer.

Inside, the Celica is an inviting mix of comfort and convenience. ST models are equipped with a Deluxe ETR radio with four speakers, dual cupholders, a digital clock, dual vanity mirrors, remote trunk and fuel door releases, tilt steering wheel, dual power remote mirrors and a heavy duty rear defogger.

GT models add to the list of standard equipment, including a Deluxe ETR/cassette with four speakers, a rear-window wiper and a Power Package, which includes power windows and door locks. Seats provide an excellent balance between support and comfort.

Drivers can adjust the seating with fore-and-aft positioning, recline function and an adjustable seat cushion. Rear seating features a 50 / 50 split folding seat which allows more cargo space for longer items, such as golf clubs or skis.

The Celica's interior is both attractive and quiet. Noise, vibration and harshness are kept in check through the vehicle's unitized body, suspension subframes and strategically placed asphalt sheeting. Flush windows, aerodynamic mirrors and door handles keep the sweeping body lines uncluttered, while helping minimize wind noise. Extensive sound deadening material and a dynamic damper on the front engine mounting bracket lead to an enhanced cabin experience.

A wide selection of factory options and accessories allows buyers to outfit their Celica for added convenience and enjoyment. An available 220- watt high-output Premium 3-in-1 AM /FM / cassette / CD with eight speakers delivers clear, powerful sound. Other options include power moonroof, rear spoiler, air conditioning, leather trim package and alloy wheels.

Sun worshippers will appreciate the Celica Convertible, which combines the style and performance of the coupe with the wind-in-your-hair excitement of an open top.

The Convertible's unibody has been reinforced for extra rigidity. When lowered, the top can be covered with the standard one-piece contoured boot. When the top is up, the boot folds for easy storage in the trunk.

Made of thick Cambria cloth, the fully lined Celica GT Convertible power top is more than just durable. It also dampens extraneous road noise, maintaining a quiet and pleasurable cabin experience. The Convertible's top features a full rear glass window, equipped with a built-in electric defogger for better visibility. Opening and closing the poweroperated top is as simple as releasing two latches and pushing a button. The top is electro-mechanical to allow manual operation in an emergency situation.

The Celica Convertible's conversion process takes place at U.S. supplier ASC, Inc. in Rancho Dominguez, Calif.

Celica buyers are looking for a sleek and sophisticated sporty car, with youthful styling and fun-to-drive performance. Celica is available as an ST Coupe, GT Liftback or GT Convertible. The GT Coupe has been removed from the 1997 line-up. One new exterior paint color, Fiesta Blue Metallic with black sport cloth, enlarges the Celica palette.
