The current Maxima, the flagship of the Nissan line, was introduced in 1995. Nissan designed the Maxima model line so it covers a broad "price walk," meaning buyers seeking luxury, performance, or simply a well-engineered, roomy sedan would be able to fnd a car that suits their tastes and budget. Last year the Maxima received an interior and exterior face-lift. For 1998 it gains the availability of optional side-impact airbags on the GLE and SE trims. The Maxima is Nissan's third-best seller. Its buyers are overwhelmingly male and tend to be in their mid-50s.

The 1998 Nissan Maxima is available in three trims: GXE, SE and GLE. Safety features include dual airbags, child safety locks, side-impact protection and an optional anti-lock brake system (ABS).
