NEW STANDARD EQUIPMENT
FOR THE
1998 MERCURY MOUNTAINEER

Only 18 months after introduction, the 1998 Mercury Mountaineer gets a host of changes, including a new standard SOHC V-6 engine and five-speed automatic overdrive transmission, available Control Trac four-wheel drive and a major exterior freshening. Mountaineer's new front-end appearance includes a new grille, complex reflector headlamps, bumper fascia and lower valance with fog lamps. From the side view, there are new standard cast aluminum wheels and a new lower accent color, Medium Platinum. Glass has a deeper tint to reduce glare and sun load. A new Appearance Group option gives Mountaineer added flair, with 15-inch chrome wheels and a unique tone-on-tone paint treatment. At the back is a new liftgate with new tail-lamps and high mount stop lamp, plus larger glass and a revised wiper arm for improved visibility under all conditions. A new one-piece rear bumper improves impact performance and has pre-drilled mounting holes for a trailer hitch. Added powertrain flexibility is designed to make Mountaineer even more fun to drive. For the first time, buyers can choose between a new standard 4.0-liter V-6 with five-speed automatic transmission (delayed availability) and optional Control Trac four-wheel drive (delayed availability) or an optional 5.0-liter V-8 with four-speed automatic and available all-wheel drive.
NEW SOHC ENGINE - Buy The Mountaineer Here
Mountaineer's new SOHC 4.0-liter engine generates an estimated 205 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 250 foot-pounds of torque at 3,000 rpm. The engine's cast-iron block has been reinforced for increased durability and a balance shaft has been added to help reduce noise, vibration and harshness.
CONTROL TRAC - Buy The Mountaineer Here
Mountaineer V-6 4x4 models feature the Control Trac system. The computer-operated transfer case, which transmits power to the front and rear wheels in 4x4 units, provides better on-road traction and more off road driving flexibility than models without the Control Trac system. Control Trac's normal driving mode is Auto. This selection provides an interactive all wheel-drive system that continually monitors and adjusts torque to the front wheels to minimize wheel slip. A 4x4 High mode electronically locks the transfer case clutch in high gear, providing a constant 50/50 torque split between the front and rear wheels. The 4x4 High mode is primarily for off road driving or extreme winter weather conditions when a low-range gear reduction is not required. The 4x4 Low mode is used for heavy off roading or when engine braking is desired.
5.0 LITER V-8 ENGINE - Buy The Mountaineer Here
Mountaineer's proven 5.0-liter V-8 engine continues to be offered with a four-speed electronic automatic overdrive transmission in either two-wheel or full-time all-wheel drive. The 5.0-liter V-8 delivers 215 h.p. at 4,200 rpm and 288 foot-pounds of torque at 3,300 rpm. The four-speed automatic transmission includes overdrive lockout. The 4.0-liter V-6 and the 5.0-liter V-8 only require tune-ups at 100,000-mile intervals under normal driving conditions with regular fluid and filter changes.
FUNCTIONALLY SPEAKING - Buy The Mountaineer Here
Mountaineer's power rack-and-pinion steering has been revised by boosting the steering torsion bar rate and power boost curve to improve vehicle response, steering effort and on-center feel. Standard four-wheel disc anti-lock brakes provide more controlled emergency stopping on most road surfaces. Mountaineer's standard SecuriLock passive anti-theft system uses a coded ignition key to communicate with the engine control computer. Attempts to start the engine without the correct key will immobilize Mountaineer. A standard battery saver automatically turns off interior lights left on for more than 40 minutes. New mirror-mounted puddle lamps light the area next to Mountaineer when the unlock button on the optional keyless entry fob is pressed. The lights are deactivated after 25 seconds or when the ignition is turned on.

Mountaineer also offers an AM/FM stereo system with a single-disc, in-dash CD player. A one-touch power moonroof is new for 1998.
