For 1999 the Acura 3.5RL has received more than 300 modifications that yield significant improvements in handling, performance, ride quality, styling, passenger safety, comfort and value. The exterior has been almost completely restyled with new, more aggressively sculpted front and rear designs.

Also new this year is an enhanced occupant safety system that includes driver and front passenger side air bags. This innovative system detects the position of the front-seat passenger's head through sensors in the seat back and disables the front-passenger side air bag in the event that the occupant is improperly positioned and of small stature. A new three-sensor crash detection system sets a ten mph minimum threshold for side air bag deployment while ensuring accurate crash detection.

Also, a new dual-stage inflator for the passenger front air bag reduces the rate of air bag inflation during low speed collisions to enhance passenger safety. These sophisticated systems are designed to reduce the risk of injury from air bag deployment.
