FEATURES ON 7 SERIES FOR 2000 Less than a year ago, this unique Series of performance-oriented luxury sedans received a subtle yet extensive freshening encompassing exterior design details, interior features, engine and transmission technology, expanded standard equipment, and a new Sport Package for the sportiest 7 Series model, the 740i. Now, for its millennium model year, the Series again adds new features, expands its range of standard equipment and offers new choices. Once again the Series includes two V-8 models: the standard-wheelbase 740i and long-wheelbase 740iL, and the long-wheelbase 750iL, now the only production luxury sedan powered by a V-12 engine. Further, the Series adds two new models, the 740iL and 750iL Protection Line light-armored vehicles, addressing a market need that so far has not been served by any major automobile maker in the U.S. market. The updates for 1999 were wide-ranging, including not only a design freshening but improved, lower-emission engines, both V-8 and V-12; new exterior colors; expanded availability of options; and the 740i Sport Package, introduced as an option to take this model's innate sportiness to a higher level. For 2000, BMW's planners and engineers have concentrated on further equipment upgrades, new functional features and enhanced safety equipment. The V-8 740i and 740iL models, both powered by a 4.4-liter V-8 engine with (new for 1999) variable valve timing, have been treated to a major increase in standard equipment. Rain-sensing windshield wipers make their first appearance in this Series, controlled by a steering-column stalk with newly refined ergonomics and appearance. In addition, a very significant group of equipment that was formerly optional on these models has been made standard without price increase:High-pressure liquid headlight cleaning system, which operates every fifth time the windshield washers are activated. Xenon low-beam headlights with dynamic auto-leveling, for dramatically improved forward illumination and longer bulb life. To minimize glare to oncoming drivers, dynamic auto-leveling automatically adjusts the lights' aim even during short-term changes in vehicle attitude, such as acceleration and braking. Super-premium audio system with upgraded audio power and components; 14 speakers including 4 subwoofers; Digital Sound Processing; and a 6-disc CD changer. One of the industry's leading audio systems. BMW Onboard Navigation System, a comprehensive functional aggregate with in-dash color monitor, controlling GPS Navigation and audio, Onboard Computer, phone system 1, emergency and Roadside Assistance calling 1, automatic ventilation and other premium amenities. Together with the rain-sensing wipers, this array of new standard equipment represents a value of more than $4,400 over the 1999 models. A further functional enhancement for 2000 is the addition of a solar sensor to the automatic climate-control system. By sensing the solar heat load streaming into the vehicle through the glass and communicating it to the system's controls, this feature enables the system to better control the interior climate under varying solar conditions. |
