Ryder Cup 1999. The Countdown Is On.
The countdown for the 33rd Ryder Cup is on: from 24 to 26 September 1999, the European Ryder Cup Team will be defending their title against the USA. For the second time since 1997, players at the BMW International Open will be competing for the last remaining qualifying points for the European team. The qualifying date is 22 August - those ranked in the European Ryder Cup top ten after the final round of the BMW International Open qualify automatically for the tournament. The last two members of the team will also be named in Munich by Mark James, the English Ryder Cup Captain.
The final qualifying tournament for the
American Ryder Cup Team is the 81st PGA Championship, to be held between 12 and 15 August
in Medinah, USA. Team captain Ben Crenshaw will present his team for Brookline on the
closing day of the tournament.
But it's not just the battle for the last Ryder Cup points that draws the stars of the
European Tour to Munich. The BMW International Open has, in its eleven year history,
developed its own special flair that is appreciated by the players and that makes this
tournament a major attraction.
