6-CYLINDER POWER EVEN IN THE MOST AFFORDABLE BMW MODEL:  Z3 ROADSTER 2.3

Introduced in 1999 as successor to the original 4-cylinder (1.9) model, this most accessible Z3 model features a smooth, great-sounding 2.5-liter 6-cylinder engine with aluminum block and cylinder head, dual overhead camshafts, 24 valves and the latest version of BMW's VANOS system, which steplessly varies valve timing on both camshafts. This jewel of a sports-car engine delivers brilliant performance -- 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds with the standard 5-speed manual transmission, 7.5 sec. with the available 4-speed automatic - but that's not all it delivers. It also meets Low Emissions Vehicle (LEV) standards and does so with commendable fuel efficiency: EPA mileage of 20 mpg city/27 mpg highway with manual transmission, 19/26 with automatic. And all this with a sonority that should elate any connoisseur of classic sports-car sounds!

As with every Z3 model, the performance potential is competently served up to the driver and road through the firmly planted all-independent system of highly refined strut-type front suspension front, wide-track semitrailing arms rear. Rack-and-pinion steering with variable power assist provides the kind of road-to-driver communication for which BMW is so well known; awesome braking power is provided by 4-wheel disc brakes (ventilated at the front) that inspired this comment from Road & Track in November 1997: "Stopping distances are ultra-short, and response is immediate - it's as if the lining acting on the rotors were bonded directly to the soles of your shoes." The suspension, steering and brakes exert their grip on the road through generously dimensioned 16 x 7.0-in. alloy wheels (in a new Five Spoke design for 2000) and 225/50R-16 V-rated performance tires.

Inside the roadster's cockpit, you'll find all the upgrades and refinements already described for model year 2000, plus an improved audio system incorporating two130-mm subwoofers and larger (100- vs. 65-mm) midrange speakers behind the seats. Three new colors are offered for the available leather upholstery, two of them in a new Classic leather grade that complements the roadster's classic concept and styling. Standard seating and door upholstery in the 2.3 model continues to be a combination of grained and woven leatherette; the leather is a stand-alone option or part of a Premium Package that also includes a power top and wood interior trim.

As another new roadster feature for 2000, the softtop is now lined. This enhances weather protection, reduces wind noise when the top is up, and gives a cleaner interior appearance because the lining conceals the top mechanism. The standard manual top has always been notable for the ease with which it can be lowered or raised; the molded cover that conceals it when it is folded was refined for easier use last year.

With all its improvements for the new model year, the Z3 roadster 2.3 is a better value than ever: Its base price is up by only $1,350, to $31,870 including destination charge.
