AN EXTRA MEASURE OF BMW'S PERFORMANCE AND LUXURY:  THE Z3 ROADSTER 2.8

For open-air enthusiasts who want an extra measure of performance, convenience features and option choices, the Z3 roadster 2.8 is a logical step up from the roadster 2.3. Its 2.8-liter engine delivers 193 hp and 206 lb-ft. of torque, vs. the 2.3 model's already impressive 170 and 181. A heavier-duty manual transmission transmits the extra power and torque reliably, and there is a significant upgrade in standard equipment.

With its 0-60-mph acceleration time of 6.3 sec. with manual transmission or 6.7 with the available automatic, the roadster 2.8 upgrades performance capability from delightful to dramatic. It does so with minimal cost in fuel efficiency, matching the 2.3 model's 19/26-mpg EPA ratings with automatic transmission and giving up only 1 mpg with manual transmission. Naturally, the larger engine also meets LEV clean-air standards.

As the larger-engined model is only a few pounds heavier, it uses the same suspension tuning and brakes as the 2.3. But it does have higher-performance Z-rated tires (vs. V), and its wheel equipment is distinctive. Optional last year and now standard are Cross Spoke alloy wheels, a longtime BMW tradition appearing here in a highly contemporary form. For a further upgrade, the roadster 2.8 buyer can opt for 17-in. wheels, also in a new design for '00. These 2-piece bolted Cross Spoke Composite wheels, in sizes of 17 x 7.5 front / 17 x 8.5 rear, are a beefy and ultra-sporty base for ultra-low-profile performance tires of 225/45ZR-17 dimensions front and 245/40ZR-17 rear - the latter attractively framed by the new rear-end sheet metal.

Together with its distinctive wheel designs, the roadster 2.8 includes some other identifying exterior elements. One is new chrome vertical slats in the grille, a touch typically applied by BMW to top-of-line models; the 2.3 model has black slats. Another is a full body-color front spoiler; the 2.3 has black air-intake bars and foglight surrounds (foglights are standard on the 2.8, optional on the 2.3). A badge on the right rear vertical body surface identifies the model as a 2.3 or 2.8; the 2.8 model has a white-lens third brakelight and chrome-tipped exhaust outlets as well.

Inside, cruise control is standard (vs. optional on the 2.3); so is leather upholstery, along with a 4-way power passenger's seat. (Both models come standard with a 4-way power driver's seat.) Four of the six available interior color combinations come with standard leather, two with the new Classic grade. In addition, Extended Leather is available as an option. Extended Leather means that in addition to the seating surfaces and doors, leather also appears on the

Standard in the roadster 2.8 is a Harman Kardon audio system with upgraded speakers and componentry.
