THE CHEVROLET "ANSWER VAN" HELPS VISITORS FIND LOCAL RESOURCES

DETROIT, MI -- You've just blown into any one of nine American cities on the Hot Rod Magazine Power Tour May 13-23 driving a GTO Judge. You're short of cash crave Chinese food. What do you do? Visit the Chevrolet answer van, of course.

The Power Tour is a cross-country trek of more than 2,000 high performance automobiles. Each evening the tour stops in a community. Power Tour sponsors and local car clubs roll out the red carpet and throw a cruise-in. Imagine this: 2,000 strangers in a town. They're on a hunt for essentials - things like ATM machines, gas stations, car washes, laundromats, hotels and entertainment. That's when Chevrolet's "Answer Van" comes to the rescue.

In an innovative move to help Power Tour participants, Chevrolet has outfitted a black, customized Express van with the new General Motors OnStar system.

Participants and visitors to the tour are invited to call OnStar from the "Answer Van" for specific directions to local businesses and points of interest from more than 340 categories and five million listings. A live OnStar Advisor accesses services and directs callers.

Tim Conner, an OnStar official, said that these services are possible by combining the Global Positioning System (GPS) with cellular technology. In addition to location of local resources, OnStar provides such services as providing route support, stolen vehicle tracking, remote door unlock, remote diagnostics, automatic notification of airbag deployment and emergency assistance.

The "Answer Van" is powered by a Chevy small-block Vortec 5700 V-8 SFI engine that produces 245 horsepower. Customized specifically for the Power Tour, it is equipped with computer outlets, two VCRs and three televisions. In addition to custom wheels, it has a custom paint job with graphics courtesy of California Street Rods. Rich, black leather quad bucket seats, wood accents and a refrigerator were added by Majestic Vans of Saginaw, MI.
