Automobile manufacturing and automobile-related industries play a major part in the globalization strategy of Daewoo. Daewoo began building its own global network of production and research and development centers in 1992 and is now working toward producing 2.5 million motor vehicles by the year 2000.
Daewoo Motor Co., Ltd. has launched four new passenger car models since late 1996. Daewoo Motor also manufactures a wide variety of trucks, buses, recreational vehicles, and special-purpose vehicles at its domestic plants in Pupyong, Kunsan, Changwon, Pyoungtaek, and Pusan; and from its overseas plants in Poland, Romania, the Czech Republic, Uzbekistan, India, Vietnam, China, Indonesia, Iran, the Philippines, Egypt, and Ukraine.
With the dedication of the Kunsan Plant in Korea in April 1997, Daewoo now has a production capacity of 1 million vehicles per year in Korea alone. With the agreement for a joint venture project with AvtoZAZ of Ukraine, Daewoo will be capable of producing 1.5 million vehicles annually from its 13 overseas plants by the year 2000. In December 1997, Daewoo acquired Ssangyong Motor and thus added luxurious sedans, vans, 4-wheel drive vehicles, and mini-buses to complete its lineup, which ranges from small size sedans to large commercial vehicles.
Daewoo operates an R&D center in Pupyoung, Korea with over 2,500 personnel and also has centers in Worthing, U.K. and Munchen, Germany. Daewoo's unique models are designed at the design centers in Korea and Italy.
