Ford Announces Vehicle Campaign

DEARBORN, Mich., On May 18th, 1999, Ford Motor Company stated they will be notifying owners of approximately 279,000 1992 and 1993 model-year Lincoln Town Car, Mercury Grand Marquis and Ford Crown Victoria vehicles equipped with cruise control of a voluntary safety recall involving the cruise control deactivation switch.

A defective cruise control deactivation switch may short circuit, creating the potential for overheating, smoke and possibly fire. A short also may disable the cruise control system or blow the brake light fuse.

Ford is in the process of acquiring replacement cruise control deactivation switches and connectors to repair customers' vehicles. Until replacement parts are available, customers are being instructed to take vehicles to dealers to have the electrical connector from the cruise control deactivation switch disconnected. This interim repair will also disable the cruise control.

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail beginning the week of May 24. Customers may also contact Ford's Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-392-3673 or register at the company's OwnerConnection web site (www.ownerconnection.com) to find out if their vehicle is included in the recall.
