When GMC introduces the all-new 2000 version of its largest sport utility later this year, it's going to have a new name. The GMC Suburban will become the GMC Yukon XL, "XL" for "extra length." The change allows GMC to market a family of Yukons, which will include the Yukon, Yukon Denali and Yukon XL.

"Capitalizing on the Yukon name gives GMC full-size sport utilities a distinct identity in the market," said Denny O'Donnell, Yukon brand manager. "Yukon is a name that clearly means 'GMC', and GMC means 'trucks' that deliver more capability than may be needed."

GMC first began using the Yukon brand name in 1992, when it introduced the name on the shorter, 200-inch version of its full-size sport utility. In 1997, GMC introduced another addition to the Yukon family, the Yukon Denali. The Denali is an upscale model with unique styling and luxury features.

Both the all-new Yukon and its 20-inch longer counterpart, the Yukon XL, go into production during the last quarter of 1999. These powerfully styled vehicles are engineered to provide world-class ride and handling.
