TORRANCE, Calif. - Already the best-selling small car in America for two years running, the Honda Civic continues to evolve with a fresh new look for 1999.

The 1999 Civic features new front and rear styling that adds a sportier flair to the Civic's enduring good looks. Inside, the instrument panel now features easy-to-use electronic controls for the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system, along with amber illumination for improved visibility.

The Civic is available in Sedan, Coupe and Hatchback body styles and a wide variety of trim levels. The four-door Sedan is available in DX, LX and EX trim packages, while the Coupe comes in DX, HX and EX trim levels. The versatile Hatchback comes in CX and DX trim, and for '99 the DX adds a rear window wiper and washer, a removable cargo area cover, low-fuel indicator light and a convenient seatback storage pocket.

Comfort and Convenience Features

Standard features on all Civics include power-assisted rack and pinion steering, AM/FM stereo with clock, beverage holders, 2-speed intermittent windshield wipers, front and rear three-point seat belts with rear center lap belt, reclining front seatbacks, remote fuel filler door release, rear window defroster with timer, coin box, dual vanity mirrors, driver's footrest and headlights-on reminder.

All Civic Sedans and Coupes feature 60/40 split fold-down rear seatbacks, adjustable steering column, remote trunk release with trunk-open indicator light and rear window defroster with timer. The Civic HX Coupe has power windows and door locks, center console armrest with storage and cargo area lighting. The well-appointed EX Coupe adds a remote entry system, air conditioning, cruise control and map lights.

All Civic Sedans feature adjustable front seat belt anchors, child safety-seat anchors and rear seat heater ducts. The LX Sedan comes equipped with extras such as air conditioning, power windows and door locks, cruise control, tachometer, center console armrest with a storage compartment and a two-way height adjustable seat. On top of these amenities, the EX adds map lights, a power moonroof with tilt feature and a remote entry system.

Powertrain Options

A trio of fuel-efficient 1.6-liter, 16-valve, 4-cylinder engines power the 1999 Civic. DX and LX Sedans, DX Coupe, and DX and CX Hatchbacks are powered by a 4-cylinder, 16-valve, 106-horsepower engine. This was the first gasoline engine to achieve California's LEV (low emission vehicle) certification and is now being sold nationwide by Honda.

Civic EX models are powered by a high-performance, 127-horsepower engine that optimizes output through Honda's variable valve timing and lift electronic control (VTEC) system. For 1999, the EX also meets LEV standards.

Civics are equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission or an optional 4-speed automatic. The electronically controlled automatic transmission features a lockup torque converter and Honda's Grade Logic Control, which selects and holds the appropriate gear when traveling up or down hills.

The Civic HX Coupe is equipped with a fuel-efficient, lean-burning VTEC-E engine that produces 115-horsepower. It is among the EPA's mileage leaders with city/highway estimates of 36/44 mpg (manual transmission). The HX Coupe is also available with Honda's innovative Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), which combines the responsive performance and fuel economy of a manual transmission with the convenience of an automatic. It has been the only automatic rated among the EPA's Top 10 mileage leaders achieving 34 mpg city/38 mpg highway.

Safety

All 1999 Civics benefit from a rigid body design with noise and vibration-dampening materials. Energy-absorbing front and rear crush zones and side-impact protection provide optimum crash safety for the Civic. Dual airbags are standard on all models and anti-lock brakes are standard on the EX Sedan.

Civic Coupes and Sedans are built at Honda of America Manufacturing, Inc., in East Liberty, Ohio, and Hatchbacks and Sedans are built at Honda of Canada Manufacturing, Inc., in Alliston, Ontario, Canada. Civic models have a 98 percent domestic contact rate based on the traditional EPA formula.
