1999 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE 4.7L POWER-TECH V8 ENGINE

To power Grand Cherokee for 1999, an all-new drivetrain is available: a 4.7L Power Tech V8 engine that's teamed with a multispeed electonically controlled 45 RFE (rear-wheel-drive fully electronic automatic transmission.

Fast-burn combustion chambers, maximized airflow, and fuel injectors mounted in the cylinder head give the V8 exceptional power and performance characteristics.  Match its broad rpm range with the 45 RFE transmission's optimized gear ratios and it's quite a combination.  Designed as a single unit, this engine and transmission really "know" each other.  To the driver, that means a strong intitial surge, quick acceleration, better pulling power, more precise shifting, less vibration and quiet operation.

And with 235 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, Grand Cherokee's all-new 4.7L Power Tech V8 continues a rich tradition of Grand Cherokee power -- and gives Grand Cherokee unsurpassed fuel economy figures (EPA est. 15 city/19 hwy) for any V8-equipped sport utility vehicle.

All that power is practically applied by the multispeed electronically controlled 45 RFE automatic transmission designed specifically for the unique rigors faced by Jeep vehicles.  Its leading-edge transmission design includes three planetary gearsets that combine a wide range of gear ratios.  In addition, the 45 RFE is the only transmission in its class with a reverse gear ratio the same as its first gear ratio, which provides more torque when backing a heavy trailer up a grade.

Other advancements include a unique alternate second gear ratio, employed only during kickdown shifts at higher vehicle speeds, that helps smooth the downshift and maintain a higher road speed during trailer towing.
