For the 2000 model year, the Lincoln Continental receives two new standard safety features a child safety seat anchor bracket system and an emergency trunk release.
Safety and Security
The 2000 Continental comes standard with an emergency trunk release system, designed to allow a child or adult trapped in the trunk to open it from the inside. The glow-in-the-dark trunk release handle will be factory installed, standard equipment on all Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles.
The child seat anchor system, which meets new U.S. government safety requirements, is composed of two permanent childseat anchors in the back seat. The anchors provide a more secure mooring for the childseat when buckling in infants and small children.
The 2000 Continental also features Belt MinderÔ a safety system that reminds occupants to buckle up with the sound of a chime and indicator light.
Standard on the 2000 Continental are front and side impact airbags for the driver and front passenger. The side impact airbag system is designed to provide occupants with added head and chest protection during side-impact crashes.
Other safety and security features and options include anti-lock brakes, all-speed traction control, RESCUÔ (Remote Emergency Cellular Unit), which automatically calls for help when an air bag deploys, the SecuriTiresÔ system, and dual visors for increased visibility.
The 2000 Continentals color palette has also expanded with the addition of Spruce Green Clearcoat Metallic and Autumn Red Clearcoat Metallic exterior colors.
"Continentals unique blend of tradition and technology offers consumers a distinctive, yet progressive approach to luxury," says Chuck Teske, chief program engineer, Large and Luxury Car Vehicle Center. "Its comfortable ride, ease of handling and confidence on the road, combined with its extensive safety and security features, place Continental at the front of its class."
Powertrain
The front-wheel-drive Continental uses an advanced 4.6-liter DOHC V-8 engine. Horsepower output of this 32-valve InTechÔ engine was boosted in 1999 from 260 to 275 at 5,750 rpm. Torque output peaks at 275 foot-pounds at 4,750 rpm. An EEC-V (Electronic Engine Control) module maximizes engine efficiency and provides a smooth response.
Performance
Continentals rear-air suspension, with automatic load leveling, adjusts automatically to maintain the proper ride height, while its Driver Select System allows the driver to "customize" the road feel. A Memory Profile System allows two separate drivers to adjust seat and exterior mirror settings to their individual tastes.
Continental also offers standard keyless and remote entry, Smart Locks, delayed accessory power, and the SecuriLockÔ engine immobilizer system.
The 2000 Continental is manufactured in Wixom, Mich.
