Setting new standards for comfort and safety

A contemporary rendition of American luxury, the 1999 Lincoln Continental increases its power and enhances its safety reputation with the addition of standard side air bags for the driver and front passenger.

"Continental buyers are looking for a luxurious, powerful and responsive front-wheel-drive, four-door sedan that offers uncompromised comfort, safety and an engaging driving experience," said Jim O'Sullivan, Lincoln group brand manager.

Housed in the side bolster of the front seats, the side air-bag system is designed to provide occupants with incremental head and chest protection during side-impact crashes. The combination air bag inflates a bag for both the head and chest within 30 milliseconds of a side impact.

Continental's safety equipment also includes anti-lock brakes, traction control, the SecuriTire system with Michelin tires capable of running without air for up to 100 miles, and RESCU" (Remote Emergency Satellite Cellular Unit), which automatically calls for assistance when any air bags deploy.

Powered by an advanced 4.6-liter 32-valve V-8 engine, Continental experiences a boost in horsepower - from 260 to 275 at 5,750 rpm.

An optional, distinctive appearance package has been added to Continental that includes 16-inch, six-spoke chrome wheels, a wood-trimmed steering wheel and shift knob, two-tone seat trim and unique floor mats. An Alpine audio system replaces the previous JBL unit.

Continental also offers the following standard equipment: keyless entry, automatic parking brake release, rear window defroster, compass, the SecuriLock" immobilizer system, traction assist and 10-spoke machined aluminum wheels.

1999 Continental pricing starts at $38,325.
