David Coulthard drove the McLaren-Mercedes to victory in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, eighth round of the 1999 Formula One World Championship. It was David's first win of the season. After 60 laps on the 5.140-km circuit Eddie Irvine (Ferrari) came in second ahead of Ralf Schumacher (Williams-Supertec). Coulthard moved from seventh to fifth in the overall standings with now 22 points.

David Coulthard's West McLaren Mercedes team mate Mika Häkkinen retired after he had lost the left rear wheel on lap 30. The Finn made it to the pits and it could be repaired but the team withdrew the car seven laps later due to safety reason. Mika Häkkinen retained the overall lead n the drivers' championship with 40 points ahead of Irvine (32 points) and Michael Schumacher (Ferrari/32) who crashed into the tyre barrier on lap 1. The race had to be stopped and restarted after the first lap because two drivers stalled their engines on the grid.

The championship will continue with the Austrian Grand Prix at the A1-Ring on July 25th.
