For the first time in six races of the 1999 Formula One World Championship McLaren-Mercedes driver Mika Hakkinen did not start from pole position, but in the end he won the Canadian Grand Prix at Montreal scoring his third victory of the season and, moreover, taking the lead in the drivers' championship. Hakkinen, second in practice, leads with 34 points, four ahead of Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher who retired after an accident. Mika Hakkinen's team mate David Coulthard finished seventh after a coming together with Eddie Irvine (Ferrari) on lap 40.

West McLaren Mercedes driver David Coulthard finished seventh after he had a coming together with Irvine on lap 40 fighting for second position. The championship will continue with the French Grand Prix at Magny-Cours on 27 June.
