Montero Sport and Montero Combine Proven Toughness with International Heritage
It seems almost every automobile company on the planet is introducing a sport utility
vehicle - some by re-badging them from sister divisions or even from competitors.
Mitsubishi Motors, however, is certainly not a newcomer to the segment -- the company has
been building four-wheel drive passenger vehicles for more than 60 years, and offers two
rugged and refined sport utility vehicles for 1999. And, while its Montero Sport and
Montero are uniquely different and compete in separate market segments, both serve as
roomy, adventurous family getaway vehicles.
Montero Sport and Montero also have tough engineering that allowed race-prepared versions
to dominate both 1997 and 1998 Dakar Rallies. Considered the most brutal off-road racing
event in the world, the 5,000-mile endurance championship crosses western and central
Africa in some of the most strenuous conditions a vehicle and its drivers will ever
experience. In fact, the 1998 Rally was so challenging, only about 36 percent of the 115
vehicles that started the event crossed the finish line two weeks later.
Mitsubishi Motors not only completed the race, it headed into the record books when
specially race prepared versions of Monteros crossed the finish line in first, second and
third places - 'in both the 1997 and 1998 Dakar Rallies. And, it has been a Mitsubishi
Motors sweep as the race-prepped versions of the Montero Sport followed its bigger
brothers across the finish line in fourth position two years in a row.
These impressive wins aren't that out of the ordinary as Mitsubishi Motors has competed in
cross-country racing for more than 30 years, and now sells its sports utility vehicles in
170 countries around the world, many of which have the roughest terrain on earth. The
company has taken this heritage and experience to make the Montero Sport and Montero two
of the most sophisticated, rugged and comfortable sport utilities on the market.
Although the Montero Sport and Montero share the same 107.3-inch wheelbase and many
components that are key to their ruggedness, they compete in different market segments.
The Montero Sport mid-size is in the heart of the sport utility market along with Toyota
4-Runner and Nissan Pathfinder, while the 7-seat Montero luxury sport utility holds its
own with the Land Rover Discovery and Isuzu Trooper.
Montero Sport
Despite its tough and aggressive look, Montero Sport has a comfortable ride and very low interior noise levels. And, because of its roomy interior and large cargo capacity, Montero Sport has proven to be popular for young families on-the-go. Even its ride height allows enough ground clearance for extreme off-highway adventures, yet retains convenient step-in and step-out accessibility.
For 1999, Montero Sport is
available in a new model. Montero Sport Limited is powered by a 200-horsepower*, 3.5-liter
V6 engine previously found only in the Montero. It also has several unique features such as a chrome grille, integrated fog lamps and color-keyed side steps
and a leather-trimmed interior. The rest of the Montero Sport line has a new rear design
with larger rear reflectors and revised standard equipment levels for more value than ever
before.
In addition to the all-new
Limited, Montero Sport is available in five other models - from the gutsy, Montero Sport
ES with a 132-horsepower*, four-cylinder engine to the Montero Sport LS and XLS models
with their 173-horsepower**, 3.0-liter SOHC 24-valve V6 and choice of both 2WD or 4WD
drivetrains.
The Montero Sport is certainly a perfect vehicle for families that believe in working hard and playing hard. Its blend of
comfort and versatility is a constant reminder "function" begins with
"fun," but, its combination of a low price and a long list of standard features
will fit most any family's definition of "value."
Montero
Few vehicles offer the versatility of the Mitsubishi Montero. Its available
leather-and-wood trimmed interior is fit for a luxury sedan, while its flexible seating
arrangement offers mini-van like seating for up to seven passengers or over 67-cubic feet
of cargo capacity.
The luxurious Montero also provides the variety of four different drive modes with its
Active-Trac 4WD T~ system. Two-wheel drive allows efficient
operation for most conditions, while for slick roads, the driver can choose
shift-on-the-fly all-wheel drive to automatically supply traction to the drive wheels with
the most traction. For off-highway adventures, the system has conventional four-wheel
drive in both low and high modes, plus an available locking rear differential.
