BOOK PUTS NISSAN ON HONOR ROLL FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE

In a book that examines the ethics of 114 Canadian companies, Nissan Canada Inc., has been awarded an "honor roll certificate" for its environmental performance.

The book, Shopping With A Conscience (John Wiley & Sons, $18.95), seeks to "identify the most responsible retail corporations operating in Canada." It was written by a team of four authors from EthicScan Canada Ltd., a Toronto-based research firm that tracks the ethical performance of Canadian companies.

Six Canadian car companies were evaluated in 10 categories, and Nissan was the only importer that earned a place on the honor roll. In addition, Nissan's scores were highest of the six companies in three categories and above average in seven of the 10 categories.

The categories in which Nissan topped the other auto companies include community responsibilities; sourcing and trading practices; and candor.

The other categories measured include gender and family issues; progressive staff policies; labour relations; environmental performance; environmental management; management practices and consumer relations; and Canadian content.

General Motors and Ford also made the honor roll.
