The PreRunner is a whole new "class" of truck
- a 4x2 that looks and acts like a 4x4

When Toyota envisioned a two-wheel drive truck meant to leave the beaten path behind, they knew whom to approach: Toyota driver Ivan "Ironman" Stewart, who's won the "Baja 500" and "Baja 1000" more times than his chiropractor cares to remember.

Working with Toyota Motorsports' successful desert truck racing program, Stewart was the inspiration for the PreRunner. The name comes from those vehicles used to "pre-run" an off-road course before a race. Mud, boulders, sand...you name it, these prerunners need to be ready for it. And Toyota's PreRunner certainly is.

The PreRunner is a Regular or Xtracab Tacoma with the same aggressive exterior styling as our 4x4.
But the similarities don't end there. The PreRunner offers the same choice of engines as the 4x4 Tacoma, either the 150-hp 4-cylinder or the 190-hp V6. A coil-spring front/leaf-spring rear suspension...just like the 4x4. And the same stopping power as the 4x4 Tacoma with its larger front disc/rear drum brakes and brake booster. At heart, the PreRunner is our 4x4, minus the front-drive axle and transfer case. What's more, the V6-equipped model with the available Toyota Racing Development Off-Road Package (available only on Xtracab) features an on-demand full-locking rear differential at your disposal for off-road performance that's so sure-footed it makes mountain goats feel inadequate.

All in all, the Toyota PreRunner is a truck that's right at home where other 4x2s seem like endangered species...
