VW U.S. April car sales rise 29.5 percent

WOLFSBURG, Germany (Reuters) - Volkswagen AG, Europe's biggest car maker, said Monday its car sales in the United States climbed 29.5 percent to 26,626 vehicles in April from 20,562 units in the same month last year.

     The German car maker said that in the first four months of the year Volkswagen of America lifted its unit sales by 49.9 percent to 90,151 vehicles, its best sales result for the period since 1981.

     The Wolfsburg, Germany-based company said the Jetta was its best-selling model in the United States last month. The company's Jetta sales in April rose to 10,948 cars from 8,217 in the same month last year.

     The company also said it boosted sales of its Passat Limousine, Passat Variant and New Beetle cars in April.
