GOLFING GREAT TOM
WATSON JOINS TEAM CADILLAC
CARLSBAD, CALIF. - Tom Watson, six-time PGA Player of the Year, is teaming up with America's leading luxury automaker as the newest member of Team Cadillac, a group of top professional athletes who represent Cadillac.
As part of the agreement, Watson will represent Cadillac at numerous special events and appear in print and TV advertising for Cadillac through 2004. He also will don the distinctive Cadillac wreath and crest logo on his shirt during all professional golf events.
Winner of eight major championships, Watson joins Fred Couples as a Team Cadillac member on the PGA Tour. Watson will be eligible to join the Senior PGA Tour after his 50th birthday on Sept. 4.
"Tom Watson is a great addition to Team Cadillac," said Martin Walsh, Cadillac's general director of marketing. "Throughout his illustrious career, he has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to be the best in the world, just as Cadillac is committed to being the leading global luxury automaker. We're proud to be associated with him. He will be a major asset as part of the PGA and Senior PGA tours."
The announcement that Watson is joining Team Cadillac was made at La Costa Resort and Spa, site of the WGC-Anderson Consulting Match Play Championship.
"The only corners I cut are doglegs, and Cadillac cuts no corners to achieve quality and excellence in its products." Watson said. "They have a great reputation and that's why I am pleased to have the opportunity to join Team Cadillac."
Watson, who has played on four Ryder Cup teams and was captain in 1993 said his immediate goal is to play well enough this year to earn a position on the 1999 team and help win the Cup back for America. He also said he is looking forward to the Senior PGA Tour where he will play a full schedule, as well as participate in major championships.
"I am excited and looking forward to rekindling old relationships and playing new courses on the Senior PGA Tour. I welcome the opportunity to do so with Team Cadillac behind me," Watson said.
Once on the Senior PGA Tour, Watson will join a Team Cadillac contingent that includes Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Jim Colbert, Jim Dent, Bob Murphy, Jay Sigel, Dave Stockton and Larry Ziegler. Cadillac is the official vehicle of the Senior PGA Tour and presenting sponsor of 23 ESPN-televised tournaments called the Cadillac Series. Cadillac also is title sponsor of the Cadillac NFL Golf Classic, which pairs top senior golfers with National Football League players.
Watson is a formidable force on the PGA Tour. In 1998, he finished among the Top 30 money winners and won the MasterCard Colonial in Fort Worth.
Watson scored his first victory at the 1974 Western Open, and his 34 PGA Tour titles put him 11th on the tour's all-time victory list. He won major championships at the U.S. Open in 1982, the Masters in 1977 and 1981, and the British Open in 1975, 1977, 1980, 1982 and 1983.
