Autoworld.com - David Lee - U.S. consumers purchased or leased 324,133 cars and trucks from Ford, Mercury, Lincoln, Jaguar, and Volvo dealers in October, up eight percent from a year ago when sales for the company totaled 287,262. New products helped each of Ford's brands post higher sales and lifted Ford to its highest November sales since 1977.

"We are pleased by the response to our new products," said Bob Rewey, Ford's group vice president of marketing, sales, and service. "These products, and the ones that will be introduced early next year, will enable us to improve our market position and continue our earnings momentum in North America."

As for the industry outlook in 2000: "Next year looks very good," said Rewey. "We believe next year will be one of the best ever, and that's great news for our customers and our shareholders."

In November, passenger car sales totaled 132,768, up 29 percent compared with a year ago. Truck sales were a record 191,365. Adjusting for the difference in selling days (there was one more selling day in November 1999), truck sales declined two percent.

Ford Division, America's top selling brand of cars and trucks for 13 years in row (and 100 consecutive months), posted November sales of 264,054, up five percent from a year ago. Through November, Ford dealers have delivered almost 3.2 million cars and trucks to U.S. customers - the sixth straight year that Ford Division sales have eclipsed the three million milestone. The all-new Ford Focus posted its best sales month ever (15,650) and sales for the 2000 model Ford Taurus were 23 percent higher than a year ago. The all-new Ford Excursion also had its best sales month ever (4,572) and the Ford F-Series pickup, America's top-selling truck for 23 years in a row, posted record sales in November (71,956), besting a mark set in 1977. With one month to go in the calendar year, F-Series sales total 799,663. Before this day is over, F-Series will have eclipsed 800,000 sales in 1999 - only the second time in the last two decades that calendar year sales for any vehicle have passed this milestone. The only other time was last year when F-Series' 12-month sales totaled 836,629.

The all-new Lincoln LS, Motor Trend magazine's Car of the Year, helped Lincoln post its highest November sales since 1990, and 10 percent higher than a year ago. November sales for the Mercury brand totaled 30,155, up one percent from a year ago. Sales for the redesigned Mercury Sable were four percent higher than a year ago and the Mercury Mountaineer set a November sales record as sales climbed 28 percent.

Jaguar and Volvo both set November sales records. Jaguar sales were 3,603, up 73 percent from a year ago with the all-new S-TYPE mid-size sedan leading the way. November was the seventh month in a row that Jaguar set a monthly sales record. Through November, Jaguar sales totaled 30,093, up 50 percent. This is the first time that Jaguar sales have eclipsed 30,000 in a calendar year. Volvo's November sales were 10,317, up 18 percent from a year ago reflecting strong sales of the all-new S40/V40 compact sedan and wagon. November is the second month in a row that Volvo set a monthly sales record.
