Seoul, Korea, May 3, 2000 - The Escape, Ford's newest compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) made its Asian debut today at the 2000 Korea Import Motor Show (KIMS). For the first time in Asia, visitors to KIMS will also see the Ford Thunderbird, an exciting retro-concept vehicle, as well as the Jaguar R1, an all-new Formula One racing car.

Based on an all-new platform, the 2001 Escape also marks Ford's expansion into the growing small SUV segment. The new Escape is designed to appeal to younger customers as well as the "young at heart". It offers new levels of comfort, convenience and versatility, along with the sturdy build that has helped to make Ford the top truck manufacturer in the world. The Ford Escape is expected to go on sale in Korea around the end of this year.

Introducing the Jaguar R1, Vaughn Koshkarian, president of Ford's Asia-Pacific Operations described the excitement and passion of Formula One, which closely matched the emotional appeal of Jaguar. "The new R1 represents Jaguar's renewed emphasis on sportiness, excitement and performance", he said. "It will clearly promote a wider recognition of the Jaguar marque through F1's massive global reach".

The Ford Thunderbird concept car on display at the KIMS is intended to showcase Ford's innovative approach to car design. A production Thunderbird closely resembling the concept car is expected to be offered shortly.

"Since it first appeared in 1954, the Ford Thunderbird has become an American automotive legend", said Nihar Patel, president of Ford Sales & Service Korea. "Almost fifty years later, the legend is back, capturing the rich heritage of the Thunderbird and introducing a modern interpretation of its traditional beauty."

"Ford is a household word in North and South America, Europe, Australia and in some Asian countries", said Vaughn Koshkarian. "We intend to achieve the same level of recognition in Korea by providing high-quality products and services, and excelling in customer satisfaction." Patel said that five years ago Ford Motor Company was the first North American automaker to establish its own operations in Korea. "Our vision is to become the leading automotive importer in this market, by providing products and services of the highest quality to our Korean customers" he said.

Other models on display at the Ford Motor Company stand, from the product range marketed by FSSK in Korea, include Lincoln's Town Car and LS, and Jaguar's S-Type and Daimler. The Ford Taurus, Windstar and Explorer -- the 4x4 SUV that supports the Korean Tiger Research program -- are also on display.   - Autoworld.com
