NEW GM HD PICKUPS -- "POWER PLAYERS" IN
FULL-SIZE TRUCKS

Autoworld.com - David Lee - General Motors Corporation today unveiled the latest enhancements to its already successful full-size pickup truck lineup -- all new Heavy-Duty (HD) versions that will be arriving in
dealerships next fall.

To be marketed as the Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD, these heavyweights will boast more powerful gasoline and diesel engines, more capable transmissions and segment-leading tow/haul ratings.

"Our new half-ton full-size pickups have steadily gained market share since their introduction last year," noted Rick Scheidt, brand manager of the Chevy Silverado. "With all of the enhancements on these new heavy-duty products, we're looking for the same type of market performance improvements. What we're doing is taking 'Bigger, Faster, Stronger and Smarter' to a new level."

GM's new heavy-duty pickups will come in three-quarter and one-ton versions and will be powered by an enhanced standard Vortec 6000, or by the available all-new Duramax diesel 6600 or Vortec 8100 V8 engines. The Duramax diesel 6600 and Vortec 8100 V8 engines can be mated to an all-new Series 1000 Allison 5-speed automatic transmission. For those who prefer shifting their own gears, a new ZF 6-speed manual transmission is also available.

"With these performance improvements, the 2001 GMC Sierra HD will truly be an authentic, 'Professional Grade' full-size pickup that will exceed the toughest customer requirements and expectations," said Jim Kornas, brand manager of the GMC Sierra. "We're looking to be a major player on the high end again." The powertrain improvements are at the heart of the excitement over these new GM heavy-duty products, Scheidt and Kornas noted.

The Duramax Diesel 6600, the product of a joint venture between GM and Isuzu, will deliver 300 horsepower and 520 lb-ft of torque, the best power ratings in the HD Pickup segment. Produced in Moraine, Ohio, the new Duramax will also provide advanced injection techniques and set a new benchmark for controlling diesel noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).

The all-new Big Block Vortec 8100 V8 is another reason why the new HD models are "power players" in the heavy-duty market. It out-powers and out-torques the competition's large gasoline powerplants by a substantial margin, with 340 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque as targeted figures. Large displacement work truck engines are usually heavy on torque and comparably light on horsepower. But the Vortec 8100 takes horsepower to a new level in this market.

Even the standard Vortec 6000 has been pumped up with the addition of aluminum cylinder heads, a new camshaft, lower restriction exhaust system and alternative-fuel capabilities. It has a targeted 325 hp and 370 lb-ft of available torque. All this, and lower emissions, too.

Underneath these all-new trucks, a torsion bar front suspension provides higher GVW ratings and load-carrying capability, as well as better handling, a more precise alignment, smoother ride and greater overall durability. Standard four-wheel disc brakes have larger rotors and pads to yield a much longer brake life than before.

The new HD models are also "power players" when it comes to trailering. With the factory-installed weight-distributing hitch, the trailer weight rating can reach up to 12,000 pounds, when properly equipped. With a fifth-wheel or gooseneck-style hitch, that capacity nears 16,000 pounds.

A Gross Combination Vehicle Weight Rating (GCWR) of 22,000 pounds puts Silverado HD and Sierra HD at the head of their class. And Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) numbers are 9,200 pounds for the 2500HD models and up to 12,000 pounds for the 3500 Series.

Of course, with strong numbers like these, the frames must be up to the task. The frame structures on all the new HD models are modular in design and feature GM's hydroformed process for the front section, offering extra rigidity. In fact, the 1-ton chassis-cab frame, featuring straight frame rails, meets all the requirements of the National Truck Equipment Association for body/equipment installation.

These new Silverado HD and Sierra HD models are available in: regular cab, 4-door extended cab, Crew Cab and chassis-cab models. The Silverado HD's bold new look includes a distinctive heavy-duty front end design that features a massive gold bowtie set against its heavy gage chrome grille. The Sierra's new look is also exclusive to its 2500 HD and 3500 models and, like the Silverado, stands taller than ever.

Both models feature integrated wheel flares that add to their strong, aggressive appearance. Big Dooley models feature stylish one-piece composite rear fenders that reduce weight while adding durability. A new headlamp system for the heavy duty pickups offers an effective illumination range of 400 feet.

Inside, all the great features and comfort of the current trucks carry into the Heavy Duty models. Drivers have a comfortable command of all controls with easily readable instrument panel displays, plus the Message Center, which monitors and informs on 18 vehicle operations. There's also the GM-exclusive transmission fluid temperature gauge that monitors this vital function, especially important for heavy duty towing.

And the On StarTM system is also now available on the 2500HD/3500 Series, putting owners the "touch of a button" away from emergency assistance or directions.

Heavy-duty pickup owners require a strong, adaptable, well-engineered vehicle to get the job done. These new 2500HD/3500 pickups and chassis-cabs offer much more than a new, fresh, aggressive look. From their best in class powertrain availability and tow/haul ratings to their multiple body combinations and comfort/convenience features, there is a Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD that can be built to fit just about anyone's needs. They are the "power players" in heavy-duty pickups.
