AutoWorld.com - David Lee - General
Motors today announced that its June vehicle sales decreased 5 percent to
472,078 units. Car sales declined two percent to 252,601 units and truck
sales were off eight percent to 219,477 units. The Buick, GMC, Saturn and
Saab Divisions posted sales gains for the month.
GM's June car sales outpaced truck sales for the first time this year. Sales in the core midsize segment rose seven percent with strong showings by the Chevrolet Malibu, up five percent; Oldsmobile Alero, up 25 percent; and the Chevrolet Impala had its best June sales in 15 years. GM once again showed strength in the full-size utility market with June sales up six percent. Chevrolet Tahoe sales climbed 12 percent and GMC Yukon XL posted a 12 percent gain. "The industry has been running at phenomenal levels for about two years now. In fact, the entire industry sold about a million more units in the first half of this year versus last year," said Bill Lovejoy, group vice president of North America Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing. "While we're disappointed that our sales are down, volumes are still strong and we continue to sell a richer vehicle mix." Half-Year Sales Report Vehicle sales for the first six months rose three percent led by GM's core segments -- midsize cars up nine percent, utilities up 20 percent and full-size pickups up six percent. Truck sales for the period were eight percent higher than the year-ago time frame. GM van sales in the first-half increased six percent with full-size van sales up 19 percent. These gains were offset by weaknesses in small cars, down 15 percent; medium pickups, down nine percent; and large cars, down 25 percent. The company also posted stronger sales for the Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC Divisions, up 12 percent, seven percent and seven percent, respectively. Saturn sales rose 24 percent during the six-month stretch. Best June Ever:
