All-New Yukon
Right-Size for
  Passenger and Cargo

AutoWorld.com - DETROIT -  The all-new 2000 GMC Yukon  and Yukon XL (formerly called the Suburban) full-size SUVs are surprisingly agile vehicles that offer the right combination of size,  maneuverability, capability and security.

Bigger

Yukon is nicely proportioned at 76.7" in height, 78.9" in width and 198.9" in length.

Where It

Yukon XL's exterior dimensions are 75.8incheshigh, 78.9 inches wide and 219.3 long. Both

Counts

Yukon s' growth has come where it counts - not only in the enhanced height and width,

but also with features that contribute to their extraordinary capabilities. They include:

  • 40% larger front brake pads and rotors for enhanced braking power and longer life

  • More headroom, legroom, and hip room in almost any position

  • Seat dimensions designed to comfortably accommodate over 90% of occupants

  • More passenger and cargo capacity with added third-row 50/50 split flip/fold,  removable seats on Yukon

  • Both rear cargo doors and a new durable, lightweight, all-aluminum liftgate with  liftglass - a major technological advancement for GM and the industry - are offered

  • Power supplied by GM's new, more powerful and more efficient Vortec series

  • More towing capability; more payload

  • More audio capability with best-in-class audio system and available rear  audio controls

  • 4% higher fuel economy and reduced emissions.

Precision

The power, strength and precision of the new Yukon s' styling reflect their GMC heritage.

Exterior

The front-end design projects power and prominence. The hood, fenders, front bumper

Design

contour and grille opening which provide additional radiator cooling, headlamps and

grille with its classic ruby red logo, are all uniquely GMC. The overall body contours of the

new Yukon are highly muscular producing an authoritative stance accentuated by its

increased height and width.

Increased

Yukon 's interior space (104.6 cubic feet) provides more headroom and hip room in every

Headroom/

seating position. Additional headroom was created by reshaping the overhead HVAC

Legroom

ducts and repositioning the outlets, resulting in a flatter headliner that provides better forward visibility for rear-seat passengers.

Headroom / Legroom

Second-seat legroom was improved by increasing the front-to-second-seat spacing. Third- seat access in Yukon XL has been improved by providing a low-effort, one-hand-operation,  sliding second row seat.

Added

With the newly available third-row seat, Yukon now provides up to nine-passenger

Passenger Capacity /

carrying capability. Either of the halves of this 50/50split-folding bench seat can be flipped  and folded for additional cargo-carrying capability without requiring seat removal.

Storage Flexibility

If seat removal is needed, it is as easy as unlatching each of the separate halves and lifting  them up by their top handle (each seat weights about 44 pounds).

Yukon XL's 131.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the front seat is sufficient to accom-

modate 4'x8' sheets of plywood on the load floor with the rear doors closed. Enhance-

ments in rear cargo space have been achieved by moving the spare tire to the rear underbody

World-Class

Whether negotiating city traffic or moving through the backwoods with  a trailer, Yukon and

Ride and

Yukon XL provide a smooth, ride with surprising agility. World-class ride and handling - their most impressive characteristic- results from a fighter turning radius, improved steering, wider track, stiffer body and a choice of sophisticated new suspensions.

Wider  Handling

The all-new Yukon s deliver a more stable ride with their wider tracks. Yukon and Yukon XL

Track/ Shorter

V.-tons are 2.4 inches wider in the rear and 2.5 and 1.0 inches wider in the front on two- and four-wheel-drive models, respectively.

Turning  Radius

All Yukon s have tighter turning circles making them very maneuverable in tight spots.

Yukon has a 1.5-foot and 2.4-foot tighter turning diameter for two- and four-wheel drive

models, respectively. The Yukon XL '/.-ton has 1.4-foot and 2.4-foot fighter turning diameters for  its two- and four-wheel-drive models, respectively.

Precise Steering

Four-wheel-drive '/~-ton Yukon and Yukon XL models have standard variable-effort power  steering. This feature adapts the required steering effort to the vehicle speed, providing more responsive feel at highway speeds, but reduced effort for parking maneuvers.

Stiffer Body

An approximately 23-percent stiffer body and chassis contributes to the new Yukon s'

and Chassis

superior ride. In addition, they feature a new independent front torsion bar, self-leveling

rear five-link coil spring suspension on 1/2-ton models and a choice of other suspension

options including the sophisticated new Autoride system.

New Autoride

The new Autoride suspension package is fully automatic and varies the amount of shock

Suspension

damping on a continuous basis to enhance vehicle control and stability whether the

System

vehicle is loaded or unloaded, pulling a trailer or not. The V2-ton models with Autoride

use a compressed-air, rear-leveling system to automatically level the rear of the vehicle

under all load conditions.

Stronger Engine Lineup

The 2000 Yukon s offer three new high-powered and fuel-efficient Vortec V8 engines.

The Vortec 4800 V8 is Yukon 's standard engine. It provides 275 hp @ 5200 rpm and

290 lb-ft of torque @ 4000 rpm. A California-certified low emissions vehicle (LEV)

version of this engine is also newly available.

The Vortec 5300 V8, standard on the 1/2-ton Yukon XL and available on the Yukon ,

produces 285 horsepower @ 5200 rpm and 325 lb-ft of torque @ 4000 rpm

- 30 more horsepower than the larger Vortec 5700 it replaces.

The Vortec 6000 V8 is standard on the 3/4-ton Yukon XL. It achieves 300 horsepower  @ 4800 rpm and 355 ft-lb of torque @ 4000 rpm.

Improved Transmissions

Yukon s' four-speed transmissions have been improved to provide longer oil life, lower operating temperatures, and increased performance and efficiency for enhanced durability. Half-ton models use the 4L60-E electronically controlled four-speed automatic overdrive transmission, while the 3/4-ton models receive the 4L80E four-speed automatic.

Higher Towing Capability

The new powertrains also provide higher tow ratings and increase Yukon 's gross combined weight (GCW) ratings. Properly equipped, a Yukon with the Vortec 4800 V8 can tow trailers weighing up to 7,800 pounds and provide GCWRs of up to 13,000 pounds - 1,000 pounds more than its current maximum. With the Vortec 5300 V8, Yukon can tow trailers weighing up 8,800 pounds and get GCW capacities of up to 14,000 pounds - 2,000 pounds more than at present.
With properly equipped Yukon XLs and the 5.3-liter and 6.0-liter engines, maximum trailer  ratings are 9,000 pounds and 10,500 pounds, respectively. GCWRs increase up to 13,000 pounds with the Vortec 5300 and up to 16,000 with the Vortec 6000.

World-Class

World-class safety features are an integral part of Yukon 's design. They incorporate not only North American, but many world-wide safety features, such as those of the European  Economic Community (EEC) and the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE).

Safety and Security

These standards contribute to Yukon 's outstanding occupant protection and provide many unique safety features, such as:

Telescoping front frame rails that allow the frame to absorb more energy by

compressing inward during an impact (1/2-ton only)

Energy-absorbing foam, attached to trim panels, garnish moldings, the headliner

and other interior areas meeting federal standards for occupant head protection

three years before the government mandated compliance for all vehicles

Standard new programmable automatic locking and unlocking doors

First-in-segment driver and front-passenger side-impact air bags

Seat-mounted safety belts in first and third row outboard positions

Standard headrests in all outboard positions

Improved four-wheel disc brakes, an upgraded antilock braking system (ABS),

plus Dynamic Brake Proportioning (DBP)

Innovative

A newly available nine-speaker audio system with a rear sealed subwoofer provides

and Cool

Yukon with state-of-the-art entertainment. This custom-designed system is acoustically

tailored and actively equalized to the truck's interior, so that high-quality sound reaches

every seating position.

Rear audio controls and headphone jacks are newly available with this system, allowing

front and rear passengers to listen to individual music selections.
