Autoworld.com - David Lee - The Toyota Camry sedan, the best-selling car in America for the past two years, improves its value with numerous exterior, interior and mechanical enhancements for 2000.

Exterior styling is enhanced with a new front fascia that features a new grille and bumper design and multi-reflector headlamps, adding a dramatic brilliance to its front-end appearance. Camry's new rear styling features combination taillights with wider horizontal reflectors and a new bumper design for a smoother appearance. Side protection molding was also re-designed, with XLE models adding a chrome accent. The exterior enhancements are capped off with attractive new 15-inch wheel covers for the LE grade and sporty 16-inchaluminum alloy wheels for the premium XLE V6.

Camry's roomy interior received several upgrades and refinements. For added comfort, the LE grade features new fabric seats and an available power seat package that is also available in a rich leather trim. All three trim levels have improved audio systems that include an AM/FM/cassefte/CD as standard equipment. For sound aficionados, a JBL Premium 3-in-1 AM/FM/cassefte/CD with six speakers is standard-equipment on XLE models and available as an option on the LE grade. A six CID changer is also available.

The CE and LE grade climate control faceplates now feature re-circulating and fresh air push buttons for added convenience. The XLE features a standard-equipped automatic climate control system with push button controls.

For an added touch of elegance, the Camry XLE interior now receives simulated wood trim as standard-equipment.-more-

For 2000, all Camry grades will be standard-equipped with new damper- assist hood struts for easier opening and closing. In addition, all Camry grades are equipped with grocery bag hooks on both sides of the trunk to help prevent bagged items from moving about when the vehicle is in motion.

Camry is offered in three trim levels (CE, LE and XLE) with each offering an abundance of performance, convenience and safety features. Carry over standard equipment on all grades includes a fold-down 60/40 split rear seat with separate headrests, auto-off headlamps, reclining bucket seats and adjustable headrests and dual front and rear cup holders.

The LE model includes several new refinements. Front seats feature six adjustments for the driver (slide, recline and seat cushion height) and four adjustments for the passenger (slide and recline). Both front seats incorporate a four-way adjustable headrest. Cruise control, power door locks, windows and mirrors and air conditioning round out the impressive list of standard features.

Camry's top-of-the-line XLE offers an array standard comfort and convenience features. Both driver- and front-passenger eight-way adjustable power seats feature slide, recline and vertical positions. The driver seat also includes 'a manual adjustment providing lumbar support. Additional standard equipment includes front seat map pockets, dual-illuminated covered vanity mirrors, heated outside power mirrors, an anti-theft device with remote entry and engine immobilizer, leather wrapped steering wheel and premium grade seat fabric and door trim. For an extra dose of luxury, leather trim is available as an
option.

In addition to its long list of standard features, Camry offers many available features for all trim levels with value-oriented accessory packages. All LE and XLE models can be enhanced with several options including power moonroof and traction control (V6, automatic transmission models only).

Camry is powered by either a four-cylinder or V6 engine. New for 2000, the 2.2-liter, in-line, twin-cam, 16-valve, four-cylinder engine produces an additional three horsepower to 136 (133 in California) at 5,200 rpm, and three additional ft./lbs. of torque to 150 (148 in California) at 4,400 rpm. Carnry effectively balances impressive performance and responsible fuel economy with an estimated EPA city/highway gas mileage of 23/30 mpg for the four-speed automatic transmission and 23/32 for the five-speed manual version. In addition, the Camry sedan and Camry Solara coupe equipped with the 2.2-liter four-
cylinder engine become the first Toyota vehicles to receive Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) certification (with California emissions).

Camry's 3.0-liter, four-cam, 24-valve V6 engine delivers an impressive 194 horsepower (192 in California) at 5,200 rpm and 209 ft./lbs. of torque (207 in California) at 4,400 rpm. The V6 also makes maximum use of fuel as it carries an estimated EPA city/highway gas mileage of 19/27 mpg with a four-speed automatic transmission and 20/28 mpg with a five-speed manual. Furthermore, Camry's equipped with the V6 engine are certified as a Low Emission Vehicle (LEV).

All three Camry trim levels are available with a four-speed, electrically-controlled automatic transmission with intelligence. A five-speed manual transmission with overdrive is available with the V6 engine on the LE grade and the four-cylinder engine on the CE grade.

The Camry chassis is equipped with MacPherson strut front/independent dual-link rear suspension components, mounted on bushed subframes which help reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). Reduction of NVH is also accomplished through the use of energy and sound absorbing materials strategically placed throughout the passenger compartment.

Safety is always a priority with all Toyota vehicles and Camry is no exception. All Camry models feature dual front seat driver and passenger SRS airbags and front seat belt pretensioners and force-limiters. Side-impact airbags are available on all models.

Camry's energy-absorbing structure and head impact protection structure help provide maximum safety to its occupants. Other safety features include child protector rear door locks and three-point shoulder belts for all front and rear seat positions. Anti-Lock brakes (ABS) are standard equipment on LE V6 and XLE grades and available on the LE four-cylinder and CE models. Daytime Running Lights (DRL) with automatic on/off headlights for improved visibility are standard equipment on LE V6 and XLE models and paired with ABS as an option on the CE and LE four-cylinder grades.

The 2000 Camry is available in 10 exterior colors. Included are four new colors including Sailfin Blue, Constellation Blue Lunar Mist Metallic and Graphite Gray. Carryover colors include Super White, Antique Sage Pearl, Black, Vintage Red Pearl, Cashmere Beige Metallic and Woodland Pearl.

Most of the Camry's sold in the U.S. are built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky (TMMK), in Georgetown, Ky.
