1998 Nissan Sentra

The base version of the fourth-generation Sentra is Nissan's entry-level passenger car in the U.S. Originally introduced in 1981, the current Sentra debuted in 1995. The model line competes in the very crowded value-conscious compact sedan market. All Sentras are 4-door sedans; the 2-door versions are sold under the 200SX name. New for '98 is the introduction of the Sentra SE, a sporty trim that features the same 2.0-liter 140-hp, engine as the 200SX SE-R sports coupe. Sentras are built at Nissan's plant in Smyrna, Tennessee. The Sentra's standard 1.6-liter engine meets California's Low Emission Vehicle (LEV) standards.

The 1998 Nissan Sentra is available in five trims: Sentra (base), XE, GXE, GLE and SE. Standard safety features include dual airbags, child safety locks and side-impact protection. An anti-lock brake system (ABS) is available on the GXE and GLE.

All Sentra trims but the SE are powered by a 1.6-liter 115-horsepower engine teamed with a 5-speed manual transmission. Standard features on all trims include tinted glass, a tilt steering wheel, reclining bucket seats, dual cupholders and a center console.

The XE adds intermittent wipers, an AM/FM stereo cassette, air conditioning and dual outside mirrors. The GXE upgrades with power windows, door locks, and mirrors; a 60/40 split-folding rear seat; and black body-side molding. The top-of-the-line GLE adds velour seat trim, alloy wheels, remote keyless entry, a security system and a tachometer. The sporty new SE features a more-powerful 2.0-liter engine, 4-wheel disc brakes,15-inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, and fog lights.
