 CRIME PREVENTION

Tips To Keep Your Car Safe

·        Park in a well-lit area.

·        If your car does not come with a standard "Anti-theft Ignition Chip," see if one can be installed in your car. This chip deactivates the engine once the key is removed. Some new makes such as the Chevrolet, Cadillacs, Ford and Chrysler are now manufactured with this chip.

·        Get a anti-theft device such as an alarm, club or LoJack system (stolen vehicle recovery system used by the police to protects cars against theft by using a tracking network.)

·        Keep valuables out of sight, including purses and shopping bags.

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) the popularity of mini vans, pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) is making them an increasingly attractive target for thieves.

The NICB, using data reported by its member insurance companies, has compiled a list of the 10 vehicles most frequently reported stolen in 1998.

The top ten includes:

United States

1.      Honda Accord

2.      Toyota Camry

3.      Chevrolet Full Size Pickup (C/K)

4.      Jeep Cherokee and
Grand Cherokee

5.      Honda Civic

6.      Oldsmobile Cutlass

7.      Ford full size pickup (F-series)

8.      Ford Mustang

9.      Dodge Caravan

10.  Toyota Corolla
