The 1997 Tercel continues to deliver value and economy in a fun-to-drive package. Featuring a new single-grade strategy for 1997, the Tercel CE combines popular features and options from both the former base grade and deluxe models.
Updated interior fabric and door trim panels complement Tercel's comfortable cabin for 1997. Other interior refinements include logically placed rotary-type heater controls, a tripmeter, map pockets, console storage space and slide-out cupholders. Enhancing the cabin experience is the extensive use of asphalt sheeting, which significantly reduces noise and vibration.
A larger 14-inch wheel/tire combination and a new sporty wheel cover design enhance Tercel's sleek contours and clean lines, while improving Tercel's performance.
All Tercels are equipped with a 1.5-liter twin-cam four-cylinder engine that delivers a responsive 93 horsepower at 4,400 rpm. Tercel's estimated EPA city/highway gas mileage is an enviable 32/41 mpg for the Tercel two- and four-door sedans with a five-speed manual overdrive transmission, 29/34 mpg for the two-door sedan with a three-speed automatic transmission and 30/37 for the four-door sedan with a four-speed automatic transmission.
Tercel's MacPherson strut suspension system, with front and rear stabilizer bars allows for a smooth, solid ride and crisp handling.
The Tercel may be small in size, but it's big on safety. Tercel's standard dual Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) protects both driver and passenger should an accident occur. Occupants are further protected by front passenger and rear outboard position ALR/ELR seatbelts, strategically placed crumple zones, side-door beams, impact-absorbing bumpers and power-assisted ventilated front disc/rear drum brakes. Optional safety equipment includes anti-lock brakes (ABS), two-turn door locks, window lock-out system, Toyota Vehicle Security System (TVSS) and a valet trunk locking system.
Tercel's European-inspired styling conveys an aggressive aerodynamic look that is both attractive and functional. Major exterior features include aerodynamic halogen headlamps, color-keyed grille, dual black outside mirrors, blackout roof drip and windshield moldings, blackout wheel well, full wheel covers and a scratch-resistant, argent colored bumper system with individually replaceable bumper moldings.
Interior features include reclining high-back front seats, fixed contoured rear seat with rear quarter storage pockets, new fabric seats and door trim, full carpeting, dual cupholders and child-protector rear door locks on four-door models.
A wide choice of options allows buyers to select a Tercel equipped to fit individual tastes and lifestyles. Options for 1997 include anti-lock braking system (ABS), all-weather guard equipment package, air-conditioning, rear window defogger, color keyed bumpers, power steering, power package, ETR AM/FM radio with two speakers, Deluxe AM/FM radio with four speakers or Deluxe ETR AM/FM/Cassette with four speakers. A convenience package will be offered with intermittent wipers, digital clock, dual remote outside mirrors, locking 60/40 split rear seat and remote fuel and trunk releases. Introduced last year, Tercel's Extra Value Packages offer popular option combinations at a special price.
Four new exterior paint colors for the Tercel are Coral Rose Pearl (with Gray or Oak interior), Meadow Green Pearl (with Gray or Oak interior), and Orchid Blue Pearl (with Gray interior). Other available colors with Gray interior only are Silvermist Metallic and Blue Velvet Pearl. Available in either Oak or Gray interiors are Super White, Super Red and Sierra Green Metallic.
Scheduled to debut in mid-1997 is a sporty, limited edition Tercel. In addition to the vehicle's standard equipment, the limited edition will feature unique exterior paint, interior and wheels.
Limited Warranty
Toyota's· 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle limited warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month limited warranties cover powertrain for 60,000 miles and corrosion perforation with no mileage limitation. Toyota dealers have complete details on the limited warranty.
